Rock Shelter

Archaeological fieldwork at a rock shelter site at Pelham Range.

Wiregrass recently completed Phase II excavations and site evaluations of ten prehistoric archaeological sites along Cane Creek at Pelham Range, Fort McClellan Army National Guard Training Center (FM-ARNGTC) in Calhoun County, Alabama, as part of the Alabama Army National Guard (AL ARNG) Cane Creek Settlement thematic study.

A Phase I survey of selected areas along Cane Creek was conducted prior to this Phase II work and was part of the same project. Also, a Phase I survey of 3,198 acres at Pelham Range was conducted concurrently. Phase II excavations along Cane Creek revealed much concerning prehistoric occupation of this specific area within Northeast Alabama.
